Ha Ji-won: “Where is the real me?”
She critiques the lightness and spontaneity of human relationships.
She prefers art that is felt rather than simply understood.

「As an actress, I’ve lived the lives of many people. I’ve absorbed others’ emotions and expressed them with my whole body. Over time, those experiences accumulated as a language of indescribable emotion. At some point, that inner world started spilling out through a different path—painting. Through color and form, I’m expressing the time I’ve lived, the world I’ve seen and felt, and the questions I continue to carry.」

On July 22, actress and painter Ha Ji-won met with Japanese fans at the “Ha Ji-won Special Exhibition,” part of the Study x PLAS Asia Art Fair held at the Osaka International Convention Center through July 23.

「Thank you so much—for coming even in this scorching 36-degree heat…」

Starting with a warm greeting, Ha Ji-won took time to embrace each bouquet and gift from fans before guiding them through her works with thoughtful commentary.

「My art explores inner emotions, human relationships, and personas. We form countless relationships daily, wearing different faces within them. But… where is the real me in all of that? Are we truly looking at one another with sincerity?」

Her pieces critique the superficial and impulsive nature of human connections. The faceless figures in her paintings—tangled tightly and excessively bound—ironically convey anonymity.

「I don’t want to give answers. I want to share questions. And I hope those questions quietly touch something within the viewer’s heart. Just for a moment, I want them to pause—and look inward.」

Ha Ji-won said it’s fine if her artwork is understood, but ideally, she wants it to be felt.”I wonder whether my paintings—like looking someone in the eyes and sharing a conversation—can warm the heart.”

「I believe art has the power to move people and transform the world. That’s why I exist—as an actress, and as an artist.」

In her notes, she wrote:

「I’m always most free and happy when I’m expressing something.」

The Study x PLAS Asia Art Fair, jointly hosted by PLAS (Plastic Art Seoul) and Japan’s Study Art Fair, ran for four days from July 20 to 23.
