Ha Ji-won as the “Top Actress”… Leading ‘Climax’ in Her Return to Acting

The icon who defined an era, Ha Ji-won, returns to the small screen through ‘Climax.’ In recent years she has mainly been active as a painter, or in variety shows and documentaries, but now she showcases the dignity of her true profession as an actress.
Premiering on March 16, ENA’s new Monday–Tuesday drama ‘Climax’ tells the story of prosecutor Bang Tae-seop (Ju Ji-hoon), who plunges into the cartel of power where politics, business, and entertainment intersect in order to reach the pinnacle of Korea, and the fierce survival game of those around him. Ha Ji-won plays Chu Sang-ah, a once-top actress who marries Bang Tae-seop in order to climb back to the very top.
For the first time in four years since ‘Curtain Call’ (2022), Ha Ji-won presents a new work, drawing attention by meeting a character who is herself an “actress.” Especially since she has built a heavyweight filmography with hit dramas such as ‘Damo’ (2003) and ‘Secret Garden’ (2010), as well as the ten-million-viewer film ‘Haeundae’ (2009), the fact that Ha Ji-won plays an actress makes Chu Sang-ah feel particularly significant.
To embody the role, she sought to erase “Ha Ji-won the actress.” Through her agency Haewadal Entertainment, she revealed: “Portraying the actress Chu Sang-ah was actually a more difficult task. To create Sang-ah’s atmosphere and energy, I meticulously adjusted my posture, makeup, costumes, and voice tone. I tried to exclude as much as possible any elements that might remind viewers of Ha Ji-won.”
Her choice of ‘Climax’ as a comeback project was rooted in trust in director Lee Ji-won, who holds the megaphone. She first encountered the project on the set of Lee’s film ‘Portrait of a Family,’ and was drawn to the appeal of the character and narrative.
Carefully shaped through detailed monitoring with the director, Chu Sang-ah appears glamorous yet precarious, but carries a determination that seems unbreakable. In the drama, she is a figure whose position has shrunk after repeated box office failures, and who harbors the secret of a murder case from ten years ago. Yet Sang-ah, for the sake of survival and her desire to rise higher again, becomes coldly rational at every crossroads of decision.
Alongside her chemistry as Bang Tae-seop’s wife with Ju Ji-hoon, she also builds taut tension with characters surrounding Sang-ah, such as Cha Joo-young (as Lee Yang-mi) and Nana (as Hwang Jung-won). In the midst of crisis, Ha Ji-won’s seasoned ability to portray a heroine who grows stronger is expected to shine once again.
Popular culture critic Kim Sung-soo commented: “Ha Ji-won is a truly distinctive actress in thrillers and action genres, and in romance she has portrayed bold women who overcome unfavorable conditions. As time has passed, juniors like Nana and Cha Joo-young, who share her position, have increased, and Ha Ji-won has stepped into a genuine showdown. In a drama industry where female roles remain limited, her challenging return is something to watch with significance.”
Attention also focuses on whether ENA’s Monday–Tuesday lineup can continue the momentum gained from the ratings success of ‘Honor: Their Court.’ This time, with powerhouse production company Hive Media Corp—known for genre works such as ‘Inside Men’ (2015) and ‘Opposition Party’ (2025)—joining, ‘Climax’ is said to boast one of the highest levels ever among ENA’s Monday–Tuesday dramas.
Ha Ji-won emphasized: “This work is not simply a story about competition to reach the top, but a drama that makes us reflect on how power and desire operate in the era we live in.”
