Ha Ji-won took the mound at Fenway Park, the iconic shrine of Major League Baseball. After she fired the ceremonial pitch to signal the start of play, Boston went on to defeat the Baltimore Orioles, completing their 15th consecutive home victory.
On July 23rd (KST), Boston secured a 6-3 win against Baltimore in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.
With this win, Boston officially achieved a 15-game home winning streak at Fenway Park.
This ties the franchise record for the longest home winning streak, set back in 1946. At that time, Boston rode a 15-game streak led by legends Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Johnny Pesky, and Dom DiMaggio. A span of 29,293 days separates the two achievements.
The curtain on this landmark contest was raised by Ha Ji-won.
Invited to participate in a sports and entertainment cultural exchange event, Ha Ji-won threw out the first pitch at Fenway Park, making her the first Korean actor ever to do so at the historic venue.
Ahead of the pitch, she stated, “I am deeply honored to be the first Korean actor to throw out the first pitch at Fenway Park, a stadium that represents the rich history of Major League Baseball.”
She added, “Having practiced hard, I want to deliver a great pitch. Beyond sending winning energy to the Boston Red Sox players, I hope to share a memorable moment with the local Korean community and baseball fans around the world.”
Ha Ji-won’s appearance was originally scheduled for the previous day. However, after a rainout canceled the initial game, her pitch was rescheduled to the first game of the doubleheader.
After waiting an extra day to step onto the Fenway Park mound, Boston rewarded her appearance with a historic victory.
Just a week earlier, Ha Ji-won had also taken the mound in domestic professional baseball, throwing the ceremonial first pitch for the KT Wiz vs. LG Twins game at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul on July 16th.
